If you feel that your teeth could use improvement in color, shape, or alignment, porcelain veneers could be your key to a beautiful smile. In dentistry, a veneer is a wafer-thin layer of super-strong porcelain that is a convincing substitute for natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers are translucent, tough, and don’t stain as your natural teeth do.
As a versatile cosmetic dentistry procedure, veneers can be used to improve any of the following characteristics of your teeth:
- Color: Veneers are available in numerous shades — from natural tones to the brightest Hollywood white
- Size & Shape: Veneers can be shaped and sized in whichever way is most flattering to your face — from rounded to squared teeth
- Alignment & Spacing: Veneers can be used to close small gaps between teeth or make slight corrections in alignment
Creating Your New Smile
Thorough communication between you and our dental team is crucial when exploring the option of veneers. We ask patients to provide as much detail as possible during the first consultation — from pictures of smiles you like or your old smile to a detailed list of changes you’d like to see in your current smile.
Tenney Dental can also allow you to sample how veneers would look on your teeth in one of two ways: by creating temporary wax veneers that are applied to the teeth or using a tooth-colored filling to demonstrate the effect of veneers.
Once we find the best course of action, the teeth are prepared by first removing a small amount of enamel, if needed. Molds are then taken and used by a dental laboratory to create permanent veneers. While you wait for a few weeks, we provide a temporary set of veneers to wear. Once the permanent porcelain veneers are ready, they are cemented onto the teeth.
It is important to care for porcelain veneers the same way you would care for your own teeth — with gentle brushing, flossing, avoiding harmful foods, and getting regular checkups. Tenney Dental will provide thorough instructions on how to care for your investment.
